Meat Packer Concentration and Market Power Timeline

Meat Packer Concentration and Market Power Timeline, By Brian Jorde

“You don’t have to be satisfied with America as you find it. You can change it.”

– Upton Sinclair

The full timeline presented by Domina Law at the ICON (Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska) annual meeting in North Platte, Nebraska, can be found here: Download Packer Concentration Timeline 10-29-10

Note: The cattlemen in the Pickett vs. Tyson/IBP case asked the Supreme Court to hear their appeal after the trial judge reversed the jury verdict. The court justices refused, preferring to hear the Anna Nicole Smith family fued case. This misguided decision ended any hope for justice while setting a very damaging legal precedent.

It is long past time for restoring fair markets — USDA should implement the GIPSA rules now and fully enforce the Packers and Stockyards Act.

Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska Annual Meeting 2010

“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of the government by an individual, by a group or any controlling private power.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States
