Kroger just announced the end of Hero pay! Who will feed us?

Kroger, one of the largest food retailers, and a member of the meatpacker/retailer shared monopoly, just announced that their already low-paid workers are losing their “Hero” pay.

Like Kroger, Walmart, Albertson’s/Safeway and Costco, the big meatpackers were already raking in shamefully high profits, and now, even more with COVID-19.  President Trump’s “back to work” executive order has granted an even bigger pipeline of cash into the biggest food corporations, while they continue to exploit and endanger workers, and wipe out the few independent livestock producers we have left.

Mike, my wife and I own Sailor’s Ranch in Konawa, Ok. We raise quality grass fed black angus, and we can’t get a fair price for our calves at market. At this rate, we wont be able to stay in the cattle business much longer. Price fixing by the packers and retailers needs to be addressed at the federal level. As US Navy veterans, we are proud to be beef producers and continue to serve our country, but not for much longer I’m afraid. I’ve called both of our congressmen in Oklahoma, and can’t get anyone to return our calls. The other issue we face is importation of inferior foreign beef being labeled as “product of the USA.” Again…action is needed at the federal level, but no one is litening! The news media turns a def ear, and people in this country have become apathetic and uninterested in the quality of what they are feeding their families. Maybe when all the small independent beef producers are gone and beef becomes industrialized like chicken and pork, and the Big 4 / retailers raise prices through the roof, people will realize what they SHOULD HAVE been paying attention to. By then it will be too late!
